The StuG III was a highly successful vehicle for Germany, but when the Alkett factory was heavily bombed by Allied aircraft, production of the StuG III ground to a halt. The expedient solution was to place a StuG III superstructure, with associated 7.5cm StuK40 L/48 gun, onto a Panzer IV hull and chassis.
